Abstract

This paper presents a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar integrated solution to provide the local coordinates in closed areas where the global positioning system (GPS) fails to estimate the position accurately. A time difference of arrival (TDoA) positioning technique is implemented for the integrated system to provide the local coordinates for an unlimited number of mobile stations, hence, extending the GPS in the local areas without limiting the number of receivers. A one-way synchronization algorithm is proposed to remove the timing ambiguity among the base stations. The paper provides a discussion about the FMCW radar, the synchronization algorithm as well as the experimental results of the proposed integrated system. A position accuracy of around 1 meter was achieved in a dense indoor scenario.
