Abstract
This paper investigates a combined star delta winding for a synchronous reluctance motor and compares it with a standard star winding. Finite element analysis shows that with this winding d‑ and q‑axes inductances increase, which leads to a higher torque density and offers different possibilities to reduce losses. A test method for loss separation to verify the theoretical findings is presented and corresponding results are shown. Furthermore, the problem of circulating currents in the delta part of the winding is discussed.
