Abstract

A questionnaire for investigating characteristics of interactive tasks, the FEMIA (Melzer, 2007, 2011), was especially developed for the analysis, evaluation, and design of retail sales tasks. The present study aimed to examine the quality criteria of this instrument. The results provide evidence for satisfactory reliability and validity; the requirements for objectivity were fulfilled as well. The instrument describes both types of retail activities, namely product-related ones (in case of a high decrease of customer self-service) and the interactive activities (e. g., selling, cashing, or offering advice). Because the questionnaire is based on the characteristics of welldesigned tasks, as specified in international standards (DIN EN ISO 6385), it may be used for statutory assessment of occupational health risks. It may also provide evidence concerning task re-design.
