Abstract
In this paper, a brief overview of forward osmosis membranes and their application problems is given, as well as a market research. The overview is taken from recent work on forward osmosis. In addition, the performance of different membranes is determined. For this purpose, the permeate flux and salt reflux are determined in a test plant by means of batch tests. A forward osmosis membrane from Hydration Technology Innovations Inc., a Toray membrane and a reverse osmosis membrane from Lanxess were tested. The Toray membrane achieved the highest permeate flux (19.55 L/(m²h)) but not the one specified by the manufacturer, as well as the lowest salt reflux of 2.96 g/(m²h). The reverse osmosis membrane only achieved a permeate flux of 1.23 L/(m²h), confirming the unsuitability of reverse osmosis membranes for forward osmosis.
