Abstract
Today’s work in geosciences and environmental sciences is to a great extent digital, all along the research cycle. Starting from observations and continuous measurements of environmental phenomena using various sensor techniques, this holds along the subsequent data analysis and development of models and simulation runs to understand and forecast environmental processes, over the synthesis of data from various sources to describe and assess environmental changes towards the publication of the results as scientific papers, recommendations or interactive visualizations. However, there are several discontinuities in the related working processes
as well as obstacles towards collaborative, also interdisciplinary, scientific work as envisioned by e-science. In this context, the paper discusses the status, related research approaches and remaining challenges for Computer Science and Geoinformatics.
