In recent years the concept of posttraumatic stress disorder has been receiving increasing attention. In addition to some previous publications this article introduces the present german rating and self-rating scales. The instruments are evaluated with regard to reliability, validity, and practicability. Criteria for the decision, which instrument should be used, are finally discussed. The necessity of a multimethod approach is highlighted.
