Abstract
This research study examines the energy saving potential of using innovative power amplifiers in public terrestrial mobile communication networks. It describes tailored power amplifier designs and presents new measurement results for three key 5G frequencies: 800 MHz, 3.6 GHz and 26 GHz. By focusing on fast on / off switching, improved backoff efficiency and lowpower sleep modes, this new hardware enables a highly adaptive radio access network that could save around 50% of electricity. The potential environmental impact for Germany in 2025 is quantified and a forecast for 2030 is provided.
