Abstract

Ploughing is an effective method of mechanical weed control and optimal seedbed preparation. However, after ploughing, soils are very susceptible to erosion. An all year field cover can be achieved as erosion protection with a consistent catch crop cultivation. The defined mulching of the plant material and the simultaneous deposit on the ploughed surface improves erosion protection and weed-suppressing effect even after ploughing. Today, no technology is available that combines these two operations to achieve even residue coverage of the ploughed area. In the presented project, a plough and mulching system is being developed, which, while ploughing, mulches the catch crops and spreads them to the side on the already ploughed area. The project demonstrates the technical feasibility and creates the basis for further field trials using a functional prototype of a front-flail-mower.
