Abstract
This master thesis aims at providing an insight into factors of influence and their impact on the business model of DC fast charging infrastructure. An introduction into the theoretical concept of business modeling is presented and applied. Subsequently, relevant factors of influence are examined. High importance is admeasured to the market development for electric vehicles and the specific demand for fast charging. A heuristic approach towards the location problem of charging infrastructure based on the average daily traffic is set forth. With focus on the development of technology, battery capacity of electric vehicles and charging power of fast charging standards are considered. Previous findings are combined in a business case calculation, which reflects basic mechanisms of the business model and significant factors of influence, as well as their relations amongst each other. The economic efficiency is evaluated in a projection until the year 2020. One main result is that subsistent business models are feasible, but come up with substantial challenges. Positive returns are unlikely to be made in less than on a five-year scale and are subject to uncertainties. A low load factor in the beginning is opposed by an overload in the long run that needs to be countered by investments or technical innovations. The high variation in demand due to the volatility of overday traffic impedes high utilization rates. From an economic perspective, fast charging stations can only be operated under advantageous circumstances, causing them to play a niche role until 2020. As the conditions better with raising market volume, subsistent business models are achievable and a market entry of competitors can be presumed.
