Effects on the Stress Distribution of Bonded Joints with Light-Curing Acrylates

Research output: Contribution to conferencesPaperContributedpeer-review

Abstract

Due to its transparency, glass constructions bonded with light- and UV-curing acrylates, possess enormous visual appeal, especially in an architectural context. It is necessary to conduct a parametric study of these bonded-glass configurations before suitable built-up configurations could be developed for a variety of applications.

The basis of such a study used a finite element program to analyse the performance of a bonded glass construction designed for use as a safety barrier. The effects of the alterable geometry of the glued joint and the material properties were clearly evident. The thickness of the glass pane, as well as the metal supports-brackets have an effect on the internal stress distribution of the glued joint.

The results are interesting; of particular note is the actual positioning of supporting mechanism. This has an enormous effect since it creates a homogeneous state of stress. The build-up (e.g., confirmation) of bonded applications should, therefore, be based on the investigations presented.
