Abstract

Backward erosion piping (BEP) contributes to a major part of the total failure probability of dikes in the Netherlands and worldwide. The high probability of piping failure is mainly due to geotechnical uncertainties and the associated complexity of BEP prediction. Dike monitoring can provide crucial information about the geohydrological conditions in the foundation of water-retaining structures. The DOMINO 2016-2019 (Dike and Debris Flow Monitoring by Novel Optical Fiber Sensors) European research program aimed to develop hydro-geological monitoring sensors and systems based on fiber optic cable sensing technologies (FOS). One of the research fronts from the project aimed to develop optical fiber based sensors capable of measuring distributed pressure which could be installed in the longitudinal direction of the dike. A fiber input emits light, which provokes a faint echo along the entire cable. The characteristics of the reflected light vary due to a mechanical strain on the cable caused by the pore water pressure. The objective of the present study is to develop a sensing strategy using the novel developed pressure sensors. The sensing strategy essentially consists of determining the required number and optimal placement of the aforementioned pressure sensors.
