Abstract
Membrane Distillation (MD) is gaining popularity in desalination technology due to its advantages over conventional processes such as Multi-Stage Flash Distillation (MSF), Multi-Effect Distillation(MED), and Reverse Osmosis (RO). Though polymer membranes are extensively used presently in MD, ceramic membranes are finding their way in water purification. Researches are in progress to develop novel symmetric ceramic membranes to achieve a better structural stability. This study was carried out to compare the performance and stability of symmetric and asymmetric ceramic membranes. For this purpose, symmetric membranes were prepared in alumina and titania material with thick and thin wall thickness. These membranes are then compared with state-of-the-art thick wall thickness asymmetric ceramic membranes. The gas permeance, vapour flux, and salt rejection of these membranes were analysed. An optimum concentration of surface modification for the symmetric membranes were also investigated and the same was applied for asymmetric membranes for further tests. Stress tests and Abrasion tests are done for both the symmetric and asymmetric membranes using highly saline concentrated solutions. The impact of these solutions on the membrane structure were analysed in regard to their Liquid Entry Pressure (LEP).
