Abstract

Chirality plays a critical role in biological activity, pharmaceutical efficacy, and olfactory perception, where enantiomeric compounds often exhibit distinct functional and sensory behaviors. Conventional techniques for chiral enantiomer discrimination, such as chromatographic and spectroscopic methods, provide high analytical accuracy but are typically limited by complex sample preparation, high cost, and poor suitability for real-time or in-field applications. Electronic noses (e-noses), inspired by mammalian olfaction, have emerged as promising sensing platforms that combine cross-reactive sensor arrays with multivariate data analysis to enable rapid and cost-effective odor discrimination. In recent years, significant progress has been made in extending e-nose technologies toward chiral enantiomer recognition. This work provides a brief overview of gas sensor technologies enabling chiral enantiomers discrimination in e-nose systems, including chemiresistive metal oxide semiconductor materials-based sensors, optoelectronic type gas sensors, and quartz crystal microbalance type gas sensors. Their sensing mechanisms, discrimination performance, and practical limitations are discussed. The e-nose technologies hold promising application for chiral enantiomers recognition in industrial applications, such as pharmaceutical quality control, fragrance authentication, food safety assessment, etc.
