Abstract

The large industry-based C3-research project (Carbon Concrete Composite) focuses on the
development and application of carbon-reinforced concrete for structures and their components. The C3 technology demonstration house – CUBE –represents a big part of its results. It is assumed to be the world’s first building which is entirely constructed of non-metallic, carbon reinforced concrete. The erection of the house shows that the C3 construction method with its entire process chain can be implemented in practice. The paper describes the development of the required building information model for the CUBE house and the relevant interconnections among the data. Important to this approach is the utilization of the parametric graphical algorithm editor Grasshopper integrated with Rhino's 3-D modelling tools, which was selected for the project development. The BIM model is developed hierarchically; thus, it contains the main geometrical information that forms the basic architectural outlines of the building along with a sequence of required quantities and attributes. But also, it has all – up to the smallest – reinforcing parts that are linked in a parametric manner to the major guiding input parameters of the building. Finally, the information model of the building supports the preparation of CAM data considering manufacturing constraints provided by the partners of the project. It is shown that the model plays a key role in the realization of the CUBE house.
