Abstract

The traditional commercial center of Balıkesir lacks sufficient functions and fails to fully meet the needs and expectations of the public. This deficiency has led to a gradual decline in the vitality of the traditional center. Following Balıkesir's transition to a metropolitan municipality, the need for expansion in the city center has become more pressing. However, the city center has historically developed in a rapid, unplanned, and uncontrolled manner. There is a lack of urban infrastructure, and many areas lack a distinct identity. Therefore, a specific study is needed to explore how Balıkesir’s traditional city center can grow in a healthy and sustainable way.

This study seeks to answer the question: “In which direction should Balıkesir's city center expand, and what functions should be integrated into the newly growing urban core?” The aim is to ensure that the city center can grow in a planned and controlled manner. The research methodology includes literature review, field research, in-depth interviews, and direct observation. The article is structured into five main sections: introduction, theoretical and conceptual framework, field study, evaluation and recommendations, and conclusion.
