Abstract

Within the scope of occupational health survey examinations in compliance with the principle article 37 governing occupational health survey examination, factors influencing the occurrence of work-related and vision- related symptoms as well as changes in visus and the necessity for corrective eyewear were examined. The study incorporated 418 people working with visual displays who had undergone at least two examinations by a company doctor in regards to their vision. Potential factors of influence for the analysis were the gender, the type of affiliation with the company, the age and the duration of the work on the visual display. The results of the study demonstrated a correlation between the duration of the visual display work and the first appearance of vision-related symptoms (p = 0.006). A visus deterioration for intermediate vision was statistically significantly more frequent in people working at the employment office than in people working at the stock exchange (odds ratio 3.0 [95%-confidence interval 1.3-6.8]). The results indicate a possible correlation between working conditions and visual symptoms which can in part be determined objectively; this correlation can not exclusively be explained based upon the length of the visual display work.
