Abstract

The construction industry is transitioning from traditional steel-reinforced concrete to carbon fiber reinforced concrete to achieve more material-efficient solutions. Biomimetic design principles and robot-assisted fabrication are being employed to facilitate this shift. However, bridging the gap between design and manufacturing is critical to fully realize the potential of this transition. This paper presents an approach that addresses the disconnect between design and manufacturing by integrating manufacturing constraints into the design process. Our workflow converts the biological archetype to a set of nodes and connections, which allows the automated manufacturing while preserving the fiber topology. A demonstrator featuring a Stephania japonica structure has been successfully fabricated using this approach, validating its practical applicability.
