Abstract
The purpose of the bachelor`s thesis "Impact of autonomous vehicles on public transport" wass to examine the applications of self-driving vehicles and to outline whose economical as well as traffic effects on the transport industry. The key question to be answered is: Which operating modes could determine public transport in the near future? The results show that fully-automated small vehicles in ride- and car-sharing mode ideally complement high-performance public transport on major routes. Vehicles on demand or autnomous minibuses in high frequency can potentially replace big buses on low capacity routes. Automated operating modes are focused on "door-to-door" operation and solve the problem of the last mile. Therfore traditional boundaries of transport systems blur as an autonomous car coud in priciple be anything, also including a taxi or car-sharing vehicle. Economical benefits are caused by the elimination of driving personnel. Sample calculations indicate that a self-driving car convoy replacing an omnibus results in an operating cost reduction of up to 47,4%. The use of smaller vessels favour low fixed costs per performance allowing network expansion and mobility improvement in structurally weak areas. Furthermore autonomous vehicles can ensure positive traffic effects, for example capacity increase of the road system, reduction in the number of vehicles and minimization of parking space required. However, both the economic an traffic benefits won`t yet be apparent in the transitional phase. Therfeore, low social acceptance and mixed scenarios on combination with a weakly developed high-performance public transport could initially lead to negative effects. The transport industry should inmitiate transport policy measures at an early srage in order to seize opportunities and counteract risks. Legal and tecnical obstacles are constantly shriking and driving further the mobility change. By using autonomous vehicles, the transport companies can continue adopting a strategic position in the future transport market.
