Abstract

Standard or extended lymphadenectomy observing the principles of 'no touch isolation' are recommended for colon cancer depending on the location of the primary tumour. For rectal cancer total mesorectal excision appears to reduce local recurrence rates. Sphincter preservation is possible in 80% of patients. Coloanal pouch reconstruction is preferred for tumours of the middle and lower rectum.
