Center of Membrane Biochemistry and Lipid Research

Organisational unit: Centre

Organisation profile

The Center of Membrane Biochemistry and Lipid Research (ZML) at Technische Universität Dresden combines five interdisciplinary research groups with expertise in membrane biochemistry, lipid research, structural biology, and signal transduction. Together, we work at the interface of fundamental research and translational medicine to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying health and disease.

Our research focuses on lipids and biological membranes: essential components of life that play key roles in cellular structure, metabolism, and signaling. We aim to systematically investigate metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes, as well as other complex diseases, at the molecular level and to develop new strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and therapy.

To achieve this, we combine state-of-the-art analytical, biochemical, biophysical, structural, and computational approaches with disease models and clinical studies. By closely integrating experimental research, data analysis, and clinical application, we create the foundation for innovative translational research — from molecular mechanisms to patient-oriented applications.

As an internationally connected and dynamic research center, the ZML contributes to strengthening Dresden as a leading hub for membrane biochemistry and lipid research.
