Abstract

An advantage of modular systems is the flexibility that can be achieved by combining and subsequently orchestrating different Process Equipment Assemblies (PEAs) [1]. This allows easy variation of the process, production capacity and plant location [2]. However, the faster provision of production-ready systems compared to conventional systems requires a new commissioning after each new orchestration, including the necessary tests [3]. If errors in the automation system are only noticed during commissioning, there is a risk of a considerable loss of time [4], which can cancel out the advantage of flexibility. Virtual commissioning (VIBN) provides a remedy in this case and enables a previous, safe test of the automation technology [5]. Since modular plants place special demands on necessary tests compared to conventional plants, especially due to the service-based automation concept, the VIBN concepts for modular plants were adapted and further developed in [6], amongst others. The concept presented here envisages the parallel use of different methods (model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop) in order to be able to respond flexibly to the needs of the VIBN in the context of modular plants. Using the VIBN, the automation of the individual PEAs as well as their orchestration can be tested even before the real plant exists. In this paper the concept is implemented with model-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop.
