Abstract
This work-in-progress (WIP) paper studies whether the propagation medium itself can carry information in molecular communication (MC). Inspired by biological polysemy, we propose a temperature-based scheme that encodes binary information in the temperature of the medium while keeping the molecular emission fixed. Through the Stokes-Einstein relation, changing the temperature alters the diffusion the diffusion coefficient and hence the channel impulse response (CIR) observed at the receiver. Simulations show that, near body temperature and at a receiver distance of d = 50 μm, a bit error ratio (BER) below 10−3 is achieved with number of released molecules NTx ≈ 105 per symbol for a temperature difference of ΔT = 5 K. At the limit of the natural daily variation of core body temperature, ΔT ≈ 1 K, the same target requires NTx ≈ 106These results indicate that medium-state modulation can complement molecule-based modulation for context-aware MC systems.
