This article sheds light on the social and conceptual history of subalternity in the years around 1800 by highlighting the presence of subaltern officials within European military and administrative structures. I analyze the writings of these subalterns for their narratological characteristics in several autobiogra-
phic texts. To this end, I portray subaltern applications and curricula vitae addressed to the provincial administration of the Rhineland after the Napoleonic Wars
