Soft Body Impact loaded composite structures optimized for energy absorption

Abstract

This study explores the enhancement of impact tolerance in fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites, focusing on the controlled initiation of delamination to absorb impact energy and prevent critical failures. By modifying the interlaminar interfaces of FRP structures through perforated interface films, the research demonstrates that delamination can be tailored to improve energy absorption, especially under Soft Body Impact (SBI) loading conditions. Experimental and numerical analyses, including Charpy impact tests, SBI tests on generic blade-like plate structures and Finite Element Modelling (FEM) based optimization, validate the approach. The findings indicate that strategic interface modifications can significantly enhance the structural integrity and energy absorption of FRPs, preventing catastrophic failures while subjected to impact loading.
