Outlet works at dams must function under extreme conditions both hydraulically perfectly and reliably. With geometrically similar scale models the functional and operational reliability can be proven and optimised. During the past years, numerous scale models of dam outlet works were conducted at the old established Hubert-Engels-Laboratory of TU Dresden. This paper focuses on methods used and experiences won answering related questions, also showing limitations of scale model testing.
