Abstract

During a disaster scenario, being able to convey information can be a matter of life and death. In such scenarios, the victims and the emergency response teams expect heavy strains on communication channels. On top of heavy usage, it is probable that the communication infrastructure in the region has been damaged and is unusable. Content Centric Networks (CCN) is a recent field of study that devises a network layer protocol to replace TCP/IP. CCN’s main mechanic is retrieving content by name instead of using end-to-end communication between two machines. CCN inherently supports mobility and dynamic network infrastructures often found in disaster scenarios. This paper investigates recent works that utilize a CCN to assist in emergency management and disaster scenarios, showcasing the benefits of a CCN over a conventional IP network.
