Abstract

The mass as well as the sound emission of gearbox housings of future commercial vehicles must be reduced due to increasing demands on pollutant and noise emissions. Due to their high material damping and high specific stiffness, fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) offer a great potential to meet these requirements. In order to evaluate this potential a methodology was developed based on numerical parameter studies and comparative analyses. The developed parametric simulation model to reproduce the complex sound radiation characteristics of FRP was validated in experiments on elementary FRP structures. Evaluation of the vibro-acoustic performance is based on the equivalent radiated sound power (ERP). Within the parameter studies different FRP and laminate parameters were investigated, taking into account the diverse requirements profile. The results show that the required reduction of sound power can be achieved while reducing the structural mass.
