More bangs for the buck. Explosive nitro(nitroso)cyanomethanides M′[C(NO2)(NO)(CN)] (M′=alkali metal, NMe4) were prepared in a simple, two-step, high-yielding procedure, fully characterized, and shown to be stable at ambient temperature. The thermal properties were studied, and the structures of several nitro(nitroso)cyanomethanide salts were determined by X-ray diffraction. The structure and bonding in these compounds are discussed on the basis of calculations.
