Abstract

Using carbon-reinforced concrete alongside innovative manufacturing technologies, such as 3D printing and extrusion, presents a promising approach to reducing CO2 emissions by minimizing material use. Incorporating sustainable binders with a clinker factor of 0.5 or lower –such as Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) –can further reduce the carbon footprint of these processes. The successful implementation of these technologies relies on materials that meet stringent rheological and mechanical requirements. Concrete rheology is significantly influenced by the binder system, posing challenges when integrating eco-friendly binders into these processes. This study aims to validate the proposed approach by using LC3 binders based on calcined clays with varying reactivity. A comprehensive physical and chemical characterization of the calcined clays is conducted, with a key objective of linking clay mineralogy to variations in rheological and engineering properties. The evolution of static yield stress and structural build-up rate are correlated with strength development –an essential step toward generating datasets that support the development of LC3 systems tailored for extrusion and 3D concrete printing.
