Abstract

A novel hybrid XR environment is presented, which covers both the training for and the operation of industrial manufacturing equipment. In contrast to current approaches, which mostly focus on one of these two aspects, the discussed approach combines both parts to leverage symbiotic effects and reduce development overhead. In the presented case, a system for the robotized polymer injection molding was selected as an exemplary state of the art manufacturing machine and the HoloLens 2 as the XR device. Within the parts “Teaching“ and “Practice“ of the XR environment, users may learn the fundamental setup of the machine as well as its operation based on a 3D digital twin. The “Support“ part of the XR app provides comprehensive assistance in production environments while operating the actual machine. Wireless data interfaces and IIOT network protocols are used to realize this functionality. Furthermore, the XR app utilizes various visualizations and operating features, which are identical for all parts of the app. Using these data interfaces and application elements, both the real machine and the digital twin can be controlled in the same way. This allows to train new staff members without impeding regular production. Tests among the target audiences (future engineers and current machine operators) have shown that this new hybrid approach has a positive impact on understanding the manufacturing process and operating the machine. Furthermore, the targeted efficiency benefits while developing the hybrid XR environment were demonstrated. Additional cost-saving potential regarding hardware was identified along the way, making it even more affordable to utilize such systems among a larger audience.
