Abstract
The development strategy of agricultural technology is becoming more complex since productivity is established beyond the single machine in a machine system and is additionally overlaid by the potential of digitalization technologies and the demand to support process and farm automation (Smart Farming) in the best possible way. Under this aspect, agricultural technology development needs to extend the focus beyond the individual product towards a production system of an agricultural operation. Despite this trend the priority of Smart Farming is currently low on farms due to the absence of quantifiable benefit in the use of digital technologies. Today the effort of integrating Smart Farming functionality-that is represented in a multiple number of applications with specific and sometimes overlapping focus-is not even compensated by the promised benefits due to the lack of interoperability of the systems. Evaluation of FMIS functionality used by the farms within the 5G trial field “Landnetz” in Saxony leads to the conclusion that only through comprehensive interoperability of machines, infrastructure and decision support systems the benefits of digitalisation can become true. In addition, there is a large discrepancy recognizable between the players whom farmers trust and those who provide leading technology. The conference paper reviews the evaluation and survey results from the last two years, reflects needs, desires and problems of the farmers and identifies representative obstacles of implementing FMIS at the farm operations.
