Abstract

Due to the fast-growing trends in automation of agriculture, field robots and similar systems (power heads, implement carriers, driverless tractors, gantry systems …) are becoming increasingly popular with farmers. However, the economic viability of these systems is closely linked to the operational and regional conditions of a farm. It is therefore of crucial importance to identify the processes of a farm where the use of highly automated systems is most economical or in the opposite-suffers from low or no amortization. Current calculation models are strong in representing agricultural processes; however, detailed and specific farm parameters are of little consideration. The transfer from simple work tasks that are taken over by robotics towards planning, logistic tasks, supervising, trouble shooting and decision making is not reflected in the actual calculators in regards of competency and labour cost. In addition to the economic efficiency, aspects of sustainability, in particular the greenhouse gas footprint, will play an important role in investment decisions.
