Conceptualizing Disruption: Political Science

Publikation: Beitrag in FachzeitschriftForschungsartikelBeigetragen

Abstract

The text explores the concepts of "disruption" and "transformation", proposing a typology to distinguish and clarify these terms. The objective is to understand and categorize the distinction of disruption and transformation by contrasting them with the categories of temporality, scope, character of change (classified by predictability, radicality and uncertainty), manageability and their outcome. The text argues that although disruption and transformation are different processes, they can be interrelated. Disruption can initiate transformation, but it is unlikely for transformation to result in disruption. The relationship between these processes appears to be predominantly unidirectional. It underscores the roles and relevance of actors in both processes, pointing to potential future research paths to further explore these dynamics.
