Comparative study of fiber Bragg sensors in remote and direct configuration for impact detection

Publikation: Beitrag zu KonferenzenAbstractEingeladen

Abstract

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors offer several unique features and are widely regarded as ideal
sensors for structural health monitoring (SHM). They have been widely employed for static and quasi-static strain
monitoring. However, their application for high strain rate applications is limited due to insufficient sampling
rate. As a solution, an edge-filtering approach has been proposed. This study investigates the suitability of FBG
in direct and remote configuration impact detection. The response of the FBG sensors are compared to determine
the relative merits of the configurations. The tests are performed on a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer plate
subjected to hammer impacts.
