Abstract

Multiple team memberships (MTMs)—where employees contribute to several teams simultaneously—have become a defining feature of contemporary work. Although MTMs offer benefits such as knowledge sharing and resource efficiency, research often highlights negative consequences such as stress, role overload, and fatigue, leaving gaps in understanding how to manage these demands effectively. In response, this symposium addresses the central question: What can organizations do to mitigate the harmful effects of MTMs? Across five studies, we examine how factors such as psychological safety, leadership, flexible and informal structures, and job crafting can alleviate MTM-related strains. Drawing on various theoretical perspectives—including conservation of resources, compensation, network, and job crafting theories—these studies provide evidence-based strategies for effectively managing the complex dynamics of MTMs. Methodological diversity characterizes this symposium, encompassing experience sampling, experimental designs, field experiments, and field studies within consulting firms and R&D units of multinational IT companies. By moving beyond the negative aspects of MTMs to explore practical solutions, we offer a comprehensive view of how organizations can enhance well-being and performance in multi-team environments. This symposium aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among scholars, ultimately advancing both theoretical and practical insights into MTMs.
