Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the\npossibilities concerning the conservation of\nwildlife in the urban environment, through\nmeasures to increase the connectivity\nbetween green areas in a city and its\nsurroundings.\nThe city chosen for the research was São\nPaulo, the biggest city in Brazil and South\nAmerica In order to achieve the goal, the\nstudy was focused on birds, precisely on the\nten most common species of birds present in\nthe city of São Paulo.\nBased on data acquired from the city’s\nmunicipality, the areas with the sparsest\ntree cover in the city were identified, and a\nproject was developed for this area to enable\nan increase in the tree cover thus facilitating\nthe movement of birds in the area. The\nproject was done in two scales: a larger plan\nfor the area and a smaller and more detailed\nexample project based precisely on the needs\nand particularities of the chosen ten species\nof birds.\nThe methodology involved interviews\nwith local professionals involved in the\nmanagement of trees in the city and in the\nmanagement and study of the wildlife and\navifauna present in São Paulo. In addition,\nthe developed project was undertaken\nfollowing the methodology proposed by\nprofessors of the University of Munich\nin the publication AAD — Animal Aided\nDesign.\nThe final results show plans, sections\nand perspectives which communicate the\nmeasures and actions proposed to reach the\ngoal of increasing the presence of birds in\nparticular areas of the city.\nThis work hopes to propose a way of\ncombining the hard scientific knowledge\nwith the problem-solving solution-based\nthinking of architects and urban planners.
