Abstract

Printer noise has always been considered to a major source of annoyance in open-plan offices. However, the increasing home office times after pandemics also raised questions about the annoyance from the noise of home-type printers. Primarily due to their dominant tonal characteristics, home-type laser printers were selected as example in this study. First, laser printers available in the market were investigated in terms of their price, printing speed, weight and declared sound power level (if available). Then, some printers were selected and their sounds were recorded under anechoic conditions. Variations in signal characteristics were observed in terms of both acoustic and psychoacoustic parameters. New variations were generated by level changes and filtering out strong tonal components from the existing recordings. At the end, a listening test was conducted to understand the main correlates of noise annoyance and to obtain the verbal descriptors of the noise from the participants.
