Uncovering stages in trip-based household travel surveys: A comparison between 2018 and 2023

Abstract

This study applies the methodology developed by Koszowski et al. (2024) to the German household travel survey SrV 2023, generating stage-level information from trip-level data covering 372,196 intra-city trips across 39 cities. A comparison of the 2018 and 2023 results shows a shift from car to walking in the trip-level modal split (+3 to +6 percentage points across city groups). At the stage level, however, the modal split remained remarkably stable, with walking consistently accounting for approximately 50% of all stages and around 40% of total travel time. Despite a decline in overall travel distances of up to 12% in the largest cities, absolute walking time and distance remained stable or increased slightly. These findings underscore the importance of stage-level analyses for accurately capturing the role of walking in urban travel behavior. They also demonstrate that the decline in intermodal trips between 2018 and 2023 reduces, but does not eliminate, the discrepancy between trip- and stage-level perspectives.
