Abstract

This is an abstract for a paper presented at the 2025 Weizenbaum-Conference in Berlin. In this paper, we explore how digital vigilantism has been employed in online communities and social media as a defence strategy to mitigate destructive behaviors known as dark participation. We argue that communities can be empowered to effectively defend online spaces against enshittification by turning the tactics of trolls and haters against themselves.
