Abstract

For the indications for treatment of tic disorders, consideration and orientation to the degree of suffering of the patient are of utmost importance. This includes both subjective perception and objective criteria, such as social withdrawal and impairment in certain abilities. This assessment should be based on a careful cost-benefit analysis. Especially in children and adolescents, the physician must not rely solely on the parents’ impression, since in most cases the perception of and coping with the disease are clearly different from those of the children. Exaggerated fears and misconceptions about the disease often play an important role. Also, due to the high tendency for spontaneous remission, comprehensive psychoeducation of parents, children and the environment is the most important and usually sufficient component of treatment.
