The path to a bonded glass enclosure: Testing from small to large scale

Abstract

Joining glass beams to whole transparentframes has been identified as a promising field of ap-plication for acrylate adhesives. Intensive testing was performed to assess the strength, rigidity, durability and other material parameters of the selected adhesive system. Finally, a bonded frame for an all glass enclosure was developed from vision to final solution in close collaboration with industrial partners. Investigations started with a test sequence of small bonded glass-glass-specimens. Appropriate for the final application the specimens were shear-loaded at different temperature levels. Additionally, their shear strength was investi-gated after appropriate artificial ageing scenarios. Material properties such as Young’s modulus and Poison’s ratio could be determined by testing specimens which consist only of the bulk material. Attention has to be paid to the manufacturing technology to match the high quality of an all glass structure.
