Abstract

For connected and automated driving to be implemented and approved in urban areas, it must always be possible to guarantee the safety of the road users . Since the sensor technology of vehicles is subject to physical limits, upgrading the roadside infrastructure is therefore unavoidable. To achieve this goal
efficiently, road authorities, transport companies, vehicle manufacturers, communication service providers and other players must work together. This is the highly recommended way to realize an expansion of the communication infrastructure that offers real added value for road safety and efficiency for connected road users, connected vehicles and automated driving. In this paper, an overview is given which actions are required and how these could be implemented. The focus here is primarily on approaches that can be pursued and applied within Germany to increase traffic safety and
efficiency in urban areas for every kind of road user.
