Abstract

Surveillance capitalism is a rapidly growing form of market power exercised by technology corporations. While surveillance capitalism has reshaped much of the market activities of corporations, it is now also affecting firms’ political (non-market) activities. We introduce the concept of surveillance capitalism and illustrate how it has already shaped traditional corporate political activities. We discuss whether political activities are still legitimate when using surveillance capitalist methods. This is important because these new means can undermine democratic principles. We argue that the concept of corporate political responsibility can help overcome the shortcomings of these developments.
