Abstract
Greenish gray microcrystalline powders of Ba3[Ir(CN)3] were prepared from pressed pellets of mixtures of Ba2N, iridium, NaCN, and graphite at 1020 K under inert conditions. Neutron diffraction data at 293 K revealed the crystal structure of the Ir compound (P63/m (no. 176), a = 9.2277(8) Å, c = 5.7878(6) Å) to be isostructuralto Sr3[Co(CN)3] and Ba3[Co(CN)3]. The trigonal-planar complex [Ir3(CN)3]6- is surrounded by nine Ba2+ ions forming a tricapped trigonal prism. Elongated C-N distances and low vibrational frequencies in the highly reduced iridium complex are similar to those observed in the corresponding cobalt compounds.
