Abstract

Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) has 17 faculties which are organized within 5 schools: the School of Science, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Engineering Sciences, the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the School of Medicine. 28,952 students are enrolled at the TU Dresden (as of: November 1, 2023). There are 8303 members of staff whose main employment is at TU Dresden (as of: December 1, 2022). TU Dresden is locally anchored, but it is globally oriented in developing an ecologically responsible and sustainable institution to fulfil its responsibility to society and future generations. 2023 a sustainability strategy at TU Dresden was adopted. This chapter presents the results from responses of 50 students at TU Dresden. All participants are enrolled in business and economic-oriented study programs. The economic dimension is found to be the most addressed sustainability aspect in the study programs, followed by the environmental and social aspects. The ranking of the sustainability competences shows that Systems thinking, followed by Critical thinking and analysis, and Interpersonal relations and collaboration are ranked the highest. The highest ranking of the pedagogical approaches are Lecturing and Case studies. The highest-ranked sustainability competence developed by pedagogical approaches is Strategic action. The pedagogical approach that supports developing the most competences is Project- or problem-based learning. The results recommend focusing more on the implications of sustainability issues and how they are addressed in the respective business and economic-oriented study programs of the university. The results also present an overview of key pedagogical approaches that have been undertaken at these study programs of TU Dresden to develop sustainability competences.
