Abstract
In view of the increasing incidence of vandalism, there is an increasing demand for cut-resistant fabrics, especially in the public sector. The wire used until now is not adequate, since it has a high bending stiffness and poor comfort, and broken wire can frequently cause injury. Tests have been carried out by the TU Dresden and W.L. Gore to evaluate the cut resistance of spring wire, netting wire, polyester monofilament yarns and aramid multifilament yarns. The course of the cutting force over the cutting path is determined exclusively by the stress/strain behaviour of the yarn. The moment of yarn breakage is determined by the resistance of the yarn to the tensile, compression and bending loads occuring in the cutting zone. For this reason, the high tensile strength of the polymer yarns compared to the steel wire, whose surface hardness and radial compression resistance are much higher, cannot be fully utilised. The way in which the yarns are incorporated into the fabric also has a decisive effect on the cutting resistance.
