Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive analysis of SBS-modified bitumen, including the consideration of its low-temperature behavior, through a laboratory-scale approach. A process for incorporating SBS into bitumen was developed, and the performance of bitumen modified with 3.5% and 6.5% SBS was compared to that of unmodified base bitumen 70/100. The methodological approach combined rheological testing using Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) and chemical analysis via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) across three aging states. To assess the impact of SBS on bitumen performance, Temperature-Frequency Sweeps, Single Stress Creep and Recovery, fatigue, and cryogenic stress tests were conducted evaluate rheological properties, resistance to plastic deformation, low-temperature performance, and fatigue resistance. The Dresden cryogenic stress test was developed at TU Dresden and enables the evaluation of thermal stress development and relaxation behavior at low temperatures. Additionally, the long-term performance of the bitumen was examined under various aging conditions. The results showed that the SBS modification significantly improved stiffness, fatigue strength and resistance to plastic deformation, especially at higher polymer contents, while the low temperature behaviour was not significantly affected by the SBS. FTIR proved as an effective method for assessing chemical aging, revealing a correlation between the FTIR aging index and rheological properties, which varies depending on the SBS content of the bitumen.
