Reinforced concrete slabs under impact - scale effects

The structural behavior of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to hard impact has not yet been finally clarified. To get a better understanding of impact behavior, a large experimental program has been carried out at the Institute of Concrete Structures at the Technische Universität Dresden. More than 70 experiments with slabs made of reinforced concrete were tested at the Otto-Mohr-Laboratory using an 11 m high drop tower with different impactor masses and impactor diameters. The intention of the experiments is to get more knowledge about the impact processes on reinforced concrete. Therefore different slab geometries and reinforcement levels are analyzed. In the experiments the bending and punching shear behavior of the slabs was investigated. Measured values are the acceleration of the impactor, the force of the impactor, the acceleration of the slab and the support reaction. With these values a better interpretation of the drop weight tests is possible. In this report the methods to investigate the theory of scaling effects are presented. The knowledge of scaling laws is necessary to transfer the measured test data from small size tests to real dimensions. The measured data and the results of three tested slabs will be presented in this paper. Additionally to the experimental data, numerical data of the impact simulation are presented.
