Abstract

Background: Little is known about the mental health and psychosocial care situation in survivors of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods: Between February 2015 and September 2016 we conducted a cross-sectional survey with SCLC patients who survived at least 1 year after diagnosis. We used the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-4) to scan for psychological health. The utilization of psychosocial therapy options was collected using a self-developed questionnaire. Results: Out of 86 persons who were contacted 60 took part in the study (participation rate 70%). Of the participants 26% were categorized as probably suffering from depression and 26% were categorized as probably having anxiety disorder. All in all 36% of the participants were probably in need of psychological care, 17% had used psycho-oncological services in hospitals, 80% of those who had the opportunity used individual consultations in a rehabilitation clinic and 35% utilized outpatient psychosocial services. 63% of participants had used psychosocial services since the diagnosis. Conclusion: The psychological burden in survivors of SCLC is high. The majority of participants took advantage of psychosocial services.
