Abstract
Mobile broadband and real-time networking are key drivers for the digitalization in agriculture [1], [2]. Private mobile ad hoc communications realized by private (campus) networks enable solutions that can be tailored to local conditions and are independent of (typically weak) coverage conditions of public mobile networks in rural/agricultural areas. LANDNETZ is the first project to design mobile campus networks for agricultural applications and environments. The LANDNETZ solution incorporates 5G, WLAN, LPWAN, and a mobile edge cloud (MEC), which enables numerous digital agricultural applications with a wide range of requirements in terms of data rates, latency, and temporal/spatial availability. In this paper, we explain the characteristics of private mobile ad hoc communications and the design evolution to LANDNETZ mobile campus networks, followed by the description of the continuous process flow for a UAV-based real-time nitrogen fertilization as an agricultural use case example.
